Lt. Governor Sanguinetti and Sen. Rose visit campus

By Gillian Dunlop, Contributing Writer

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti was accompanied by State Senator Chapin Rose and State Attorney candidate George Vargas for a day on the University campus taking time to meet with students and explore campus.

Sanguinetti, who is the first ever latina lieutenant governor in the United States and the daughter of two immigrants, spent much of the first half of the day meeting with other minorities on campus in the classroom as well as at La Casa Cultural Latina.

“I’m so proud to come to the classroom and let everyone know the American dream is still alive,” she said.

Sanguinetti, Rose and Vargas also made the time to stop at the Espresso Royale in Urbana where they greeted all patrons and staff by walking around to individual tables and introducing themselves.

“I always like to stop by the University and say hi to the students,” Sanguinetti said. “You are our future.”

Students had the opportunity to ask Sanguinetti questions. Although Sanguinetti was asked about the current presidential election, she preferred to talk about how Illinois needs to improve its budget.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am for this election to be over with so we can get back to the bargaining table,” she said. “We need reform, and we need to rise our way out of our problems instead of taxing our way out.”
