Library celebrates National Gaming Day

The University’s undergraduate library participated in the American Library Association’s 3rd annual National Gaming Day today from 11a.m. to 4 p.m.

The main event was a Super Smash Brothers Brawl tournament, where four student qualifiers competed against other libraries. A workshop on graphics programming, taught by Brandon Smith, a research programmer for the Institute for Genomic Biology, was also available to the public. Throughout the day, consoles and videogames from the library’s collection were available for the public to play.

“The purpose (of National Gaming Day) is to help raise awareness of the fact that the library has a gaming selection and to make connections between students and both the games themselves, as well as a number of books and materials on gaming,” said David Henry Ward, associate professor at the undergraduate library.

Eric Joyner, sophomore in Engineering, was a qualifier for the Super Smash Brothers Brawl tournament. He said he enjoyed the tournament and has checked out videogames from the library before.
