J.D. Nielsen taken by the Angels

Another member of the Illinois battery was selected as left-handed pitcher J.D. Nielsen was selected by the Los Angeles Angels.

Nielsen pitched out of the bullpen, utilizing his unorthodox submarine release from the left side. He finished the season 5-1 with 30 strikeouts and a 3.60 ERA in 30.0 innings pitched. Nielsen finished tied for first in wins and second on the team in saves (6), trailing only Nick Blackburn, who was selected earlier in the day.

The senior is another arm Illinois will have to replace in their upcoming season.
