Social media accounts to stay updated on campus

By Molly Leahy, Web manager

Let’s be honest: we spend more time on our phones in class, walking to class and laying in our beds than doing anything productive. Social media is everything, so whether you’re an incoming freshman or lazy senior, here are the best accounts to follow to stay up to date on the happenings here at Illinois.

Facebook: Illinois Student Senate

This page, run by members of the student government, Illinois Student Senate, will keep you updated on legislation at the University level that affects students.

The Facebook page also allows you to get in touch with your representative and learn more about the students representing you as they work to make campus better.

Spotify: The University of Illinois Marching Illini

Thank you for subscribing!

If you’re a new or old student who finds yourself putting your hands up at the wrong time at football games or staying quiet during the Alma Mater because you don’t know the words, do not fret, Spotify is here to help.

The Marching Illini’s account features all of the game songs for you to study and practice your clapping, jumping and swaying. This is another great way to feel like a part of the school and root on our sports teams.

Instagram: @illiniview

Illinois Admissions kills the Instagram game. These artsy student shots of campus spots, activities and buildings help make our sometimes boring campus take on a new look.

This vibrant account features a cooler way to see our school that isn’t your typical Quad or Alma picture and is run by students who work for the office. .

Snapchat: Campus snap story

Getting on Illinois’s campus snap story is an accomplishment. Some suggestions if you wish to appear on it include playing with squirrels, watching a cool science experiment in class, or doing something stupid on the Quad.

Watching the story daily not only provides entertainment, but will let you see the activities on campus. It’s also a great study break to watch other students take study breaks. The University is a community, and Snapchat is a great way to stay connected with others.

Twitter: @IlliniAD

There are countless Twitter accounts run by the University, campus RSOs and Illinois sports teams, but Josh Whitman, the new Illinois athletic director, is one of the best.

Whitman is a former Illini football player and law school alumnus who was hired as athletic director last spring. On one of Whitman’s first days here at Illinois, he documented his run through campus by taking selfies with Alma and the Red Grange statue outside of Memorial Stadium.

Look for #WeWillWin, that has become the motto for Illinois athletics.

Lastly, the Daily Illini is the best source for on campus news. Follow the DI on Twitter for the latest articles on athletic events, fun columns and local news to help you get to know your city a little better. If you want more sports or editorial content, you can also follow @di_sports and @di_opinion.

The Daily Illini Facebook page will include links to stories on the website and provide a place for students to comment. Many students do not know what is happeneing on campus. Following the right accounts is a quick way to be informed.
