Illinois men’s basketball to participate in State Farm Chicago Legends doubleheader

By Mike Gasick, Assistant sports editor

The Big Ten Network has decided to televise the State Farm Chicago Legends men’s basketball doubleheader Dec. 17. The two games will take place at the United Center in Chicago.

The State Farm Chicago Legends event, according to its website, “celebrates Chicago’s rich basketball history by recognizing those who made it legendary.”

Its website further says that the doubleheader is a way to recognize teams with local connections that also possess storied traditions.

Illinois will be a part of the inaugural event, taking on BYU at 8:30 p.m. The two teams last faced off in 1980, resulting in a BYU win.

The Cougars failed to make the NCAA tournament last year, while the Illini have missed the past three years.

Illinois has made the trip north to the United Center in recent years, yielding wins to UIC in 2013 and 2015 and a loss to Oregon in 2014.

Northwestern will take the court against the Dayton Flyers at 6:00 p.m.
