The 97th annual Academy Awards were hosted last night by talk show personality Conan O’Brien live from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
There were two notable wins of the night. “Flow” won Best Animated Film and brought Latvia its first Academy Award. Additionally, “No Other Land” won Best Documentary Feature Film, highlighting the Israeli military’s destruction of the director’s hometown, Masafer Yatta.
Sean Baker’s “Anora” won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” was up next with three.
The show kicked off with a medley of music from “Wicked” stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The pair sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Home” and “Defying Gravity.”
Following the performance, O’Brien took the stage and set the mood with his opening monologue. He poked fun at several moments in the film industry throughout the year. O’Brien then broke into a song about ensuring that the Oscars run smoothly and don’t waste viewers’ time.

Unfortunately, it seems that the show’s crew didn’t receive the memo. This year’s ceremony felt bloated and reached for any sort of time filler.
Unlike previous ceremonies, this year’s event lacked the live performances of the nominees in the “Best Original Song” category.
What audiences instead received was a tribute to James Bond with renditions of some of the series’ most popular songs sung by BLACKPINK’s LISA, Doja Cat and Raye.
While this tribute was visually and audibly impressive, it felt like nothing more than fluff to pad the time in an already slow-paced ceremony.
Other moments between awards featured skits starring O’Brien and a performance from Queen Latifah honoring producer and composer Quincy Jones with a rendition of “Ease on Down the Road” from 1987’s “The Wiz.”
