“A Minecraft Movie” is a hilarious and cheesy film that will make any audience laugh uncontrollably.
In “A Minecraft Movie,” Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), Garrett (Jason Momoa) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) discover a mysterious portal that takes them to the Overworld, the Minecraft term for the standard dimension players spawn in. Stuck in an unknown environment with scary entities, the group looks to Steve (Jack Black) to help them return home.
While the movie has received criticism for being overhyped, having a lack of a plot and the missed opportunity to include Herobrine, the CGI is colorful, incredibly detailed and accurate to Minecraft, which fits naturally into the live-action movie.
The silly dialogue from each character, along with intense action, made the ticket worth the price. Black and Momoa’s duo performance showcased Steve and Garrett’s friendship development, while Brooks’ acting highlighted Dawn’s energetic personality. Despite the lack of a villain background, Malgosha, played by Rachel House, had a unique, taunting voice.

On the other hand, audiences can see that Hansen and Myers did an outstanding job playing their characters, who are siblings. Not to mention, Vice Principal Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge), although not shown often in the movie, was amusing to watch.
“A Minecraft Movie” stayed true to the game’s mechanics and soundtracks. To make it nostalgic and entertaining for Minecraft players, songs like “Minecraft” by C418 and familiar sounds such as villagers obnoxiously grunting were added. Additionally, Black’s singing added to the soundtrack’s catchiness and the movie’s silliness.
The developers mostly stuck to the elements of the game. Unfortunately, they also missed a handful of details, such as the exterior of the woodland mansion being the wrong color.
Despite a few inaccuracies, the producers added twists, with new perks and interesting items that differ from the actual game. For example, the invention of the Tater Tot launcher and having an iron golem wearing boots of swiftness enhanced the storyline.
The film also snuck in popular Minecraft YouTubers like DanTDM and LDShadowLady, as well as a pig wearing a crown in one scene, used as a tribute to deceased Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade.
The movie’s funny dialogue and cliches is what make it perfect for audiences to watch, no matter the age. Like Minecraft creator Notch said, “for a movie about a game with literally zero plot,” “A Minecraft Movie” is “surprisingly fun” and successfully communicates a thematic message about the significance of creativity and partnership, while keeping it hysterical.
With that being said, grab your crafting table, diamond pickaxe, flint and steel or whatever you have on you, and enjoy the wonderful journey of “A Minecraft Movie.”
