All UI students in Belgium safe after explosions in Brussels

All Illinois Abroad students in Belgium were confirmed safe after bombings this morning at Brussels, according to the Office of International Safety and Security at Illinois.

The study abroad office has confirmed accounts for all abroad students on sponsored programs in Belgium said Andrea Bordeau, assistant director for International Safety and Security.

“We have 57 faculty and students on sponsored programs in Belgium. They are all confirmed safe,” Bordeau said.

The bomb blasts in Brussels occurred Tuesday morning. The Maelbeek metro station and the Zaventem airport were hit, with about 20 dead at Maelbeek and 14 dead at Zaventem according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

Bordeau alerted the Illinois Abroad community through a Facebook post earlier this morning to stay safe and to contact their families and the study abroad office.
