The Krannert Center for the Performing Arts has canceled all public, in-person performances that were originally planned for the spring of 2021. 

In the midst of COVID, all in-person events for the Krannert Center were canceled for the fall semester.

This decision was made after careful discussion among the School of Music, Lyric Theatre, Dance at Illinois, Illini Theatre, as well the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra.  

“While we long to gather with you again in our theatres in person as soon as that is possible, I assure you that the center remains firmly committed to its mission and core values,” said Krannert Center Director Mike Ross. 

In the current semester, the Krannert Center has performances with students who are following the safety measures and guidelines. They are all livestreamed for viewers to watch at home. 

Bridget Lee Calfas, the advertising and publicity director for Krannert Center, described how next semester, there will be both ticketed and non-ticketed events. Krannert will continue hosting free performances for all to view as well as some ticketed events that will be exclusive including the upcoming “Manual Cinema’s Christmas Carol.”

Though families and students won’t be able to attend performances held in-person, Calfas said they will not have to miss a single minute of events offered by the Krannert Center. 

“We will continue to develop ways to connect with you digitally,” Ross said. “We will continue to explore the possibility of safe outdoor gatherings.”

Krannert made huge improvements when it comes to digitalizing everything, described Calfas. Krannert was able to experiment with many projects, including an experimental short film by Somi that is currently available to watch for free.
