College Concierge cleans up campus

By Jenny Winkler

Most college students must fend for themselves when it comes to cleaning where they live. There are no mothers around to load the dishwasher or make the beds and not many college students jump at the chance to be the “cleaning lady” of the apartment or dorm room. Therefore, most bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms on the University campus are messy, unkempt and some would say possibly unlivable. Two University students recently decided to step up and become the “Mr. Cleans” of campus.

Brady Cummins and Brandon Taylor, both University students and Illinois rugby players, recently started College Concierge, a professional cleaning service catering to the University campus and the Champaign-Urbana area.

“Most students probably won’t use this,” said Cummins, junior in ALS. “But there are 40,000 students on campus.”

Cummins originally had the idea to start a cleaning service at the beginning of the semester.

“There are students who are lazy, dirty and have extra money (to spend),” Cummins said. “There’s a couple thousand of those students on campus and we just want to help them out.”

Cummins, who once worked as a janitor in a dentist’s office has experience in unclean environments. Both he and Taylor live with 13 other guys in the “Rugby House,” 1004 S. Lincoln Ave., which most of the time is strewn with beer cans, spoiled food and a variety of trash.

“Living in the rugby house prepares you for everything,” Cummins said.

Neither Cummins nor Taylor has problems facing dirty living situations. When they showed up at a cleaning job a week after Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day, they came face to face with week-old vomit and weren’t phased at all.

“They say, ‘we’re sorry it’s so dirty’ and we’re like, ‘It’s not that bad,'” said Taylor, junior in engineering.

The clients took before and after pictures and were pretty happy with the end result, Cummins said.

“I’ve always been motivated,” he said. “I put my motivation into a business. We’d rather run our own business and get paid for what we’re worth.”

The guys plan to use the pictures for advertising. Currently, clients find out about College Concierge through friends, flyers and the Web site.

Christopher Moller, senior in math, called College Concierge because his dog is constantly getting into the garbage and making messes in his apartment.

“We’re not motivated to do it ourselves,” Moller said. “So we were like, ‘Let’s get someone else to do it.’ We were tired of living in the filth.”

Moller is happy with the end result and said he would probably hire College Concierge again at the end of the semester before he moves out of his apartment.

“My roommate’s girlfriend is down for the week and she said, ‘Wait a minute, boys did this?'” Moller said.

While their client base is small, the boys plan to expand.

“Our plan for summer is to expand to small businesses and from there build a good, solid client base,” Cummins said. “Businesses will be more consistent, while students aren’t.”

The guys want to eventually hire employees. They also have a business plan with a strategy for expansion.

Cummins and Taylor have been in contact with people who run a similar cleaning business at Boston University. Cummins said the business has been successful and has expanded to 13 colleges in Boston. The Boston University business brings in about a million dollars in sales a year, Cummins said.

“I had the (College Concierge) link up in my (AOL Instant Messenger) profile, and my friend goes, ‘Dude, you’re gonna be so rich,'” Taylor said.
