Spicing up room space

By Angela Loiacono

The white walls of your room can be drab and unexciting. Decorating a room that you will most likely move out of in nine months can prove to be a challenge. But by applying a few easy accents to your room, you can quickly transform your space into a comfortable and personal area that feels like home.

Try hanging a mirror or two on the wall. Placing mirrors in small spaces can make the room seem larger. Also, placing a mirror among pictures on the wall or leaning on a shelf is a nice decorative touch.

Use shadow boxes. Whether large or small, shadow boxes are a great touch to a room. Fill the bottom of a shadow box with sand and shells and then pin your favorite vacation photo higher in the box. Or simply use your favorite scrapbook page for a background in the box and include a memento that can sit along the bottom.

Throw a light-colored rug down on the floor. This will give you something soft to put your feet on when you wake up in the morning, and it can also add to the overall warmth of your room.

Use fresh flowers for an added touch to your space. A decorative clear or colored vase with flowers is something that will easily fit into any type of room. Even a single carnation can brighten up your desktop or dresser. Get creative with it and decorate the vase with some ribbon or put fresh flowers in a wall sconce. Many wall sconces have glass that holds a candle. Simply replace the candle with your favorite flower.

Use drapery to your advantage and make your space appear larger at the same time. Hanging long drapes high above the actual top of your window will create the illusion of a larger space. Also, taking a simple drapery and intertwining a string of fake flowers across the top pole can be a cute touch.
