Adding to the seemingly never-ending development of Neil Street as a restaurant corridor, Oberweis Dairy plans to open a new branch of their Illinois-based chain That Burger Joint in the former location of Atlanta Bread Company.

That Burger Joint offers standard American fare like hot dogs and fries, but the real focus is on their burgers, as their name suggests. There are two sizes of burgers and the larger size is offered on a pretzel bun. Both burgers include unlimited free toppings, although cheese and bacon are available only for an additional charge. The menu is very similar to Five Guys, with $8 for the most expensive burger.

Joe Oberweis, son of Illinois State Senator Jim Oberweis, is an Illinois alumnus and the current CEO and president of Oberweis Dairy.

“We had been wanting to expand for a while, and with the addition of That Burger Joint we felt like the time was right,” Oberweis said.

The restaurant is slated to open in July, although it’s hard to give an exact date, Oberweis said.

The restaurant will be shared with Oberweis’ original Oberweis Dairy and Ice Cream Store, like all four of the That Burger Joint locations. The burger chain has locations in Glen Ellyn, Bolingbrook, Naperville and Skokie, but has yet to expand outside of Illinois like the dairy counterpart.

The company has offered home deliveries of Oberweis products in the area for about two decades. Oberweis Dairy originated in Aurora, Illinois, and the Oberweis family has strong ties to Champaign. His mom and dad met right on campus, in the Illini Union bowling alley.

While the area around Marketplace Mall and Prospect Avenue hasn’t changed much, Oberweis said he noticed that there has been a lot more development on South Neil recently and that even Green Street looks tremendously different from when he was a student here.

“I studied business management and was there until 2000,” Oberweis said.

Many of the Oberweis family attended the University and Oberweis said his nephew, Jack, is currently enrolled as a freshman. However, the decision to open up a location in Champaign wasn’t necessarily personal, he said.

While there is no shortage of burgers and ice cream on and around campus, Oberweis brings a household name and a family-friendly atmosphere. That Burger Joint is also very affordable for college students who may be on a budget, as everything on the menu costs less than $10.

Marcin Piechocki, freshman in DGS, said that he is really excited for the restaurant to open. He said he often went with his dad when he was growing up.

“Nothing brings back the memories of my childhood like Oberweis and burgers.” Piechocki said.
