Student fashion designers learned how to use 3D software to create sustainable garments during a three-session fashion workshop.
The workshop was held over two weeks with sessions on April 11, April 18 and April 25. Students learned about sustainable fashion initiatives from a presentation, practiced cutting out a simple sustainable shirt design and transitioned to learning how to use the CLO3D online software.
“A main goal was to introduce the students to a new software that allowed us to design while seeing the visualization of the design on an avatar,” said Chiara Vincenzi, clinical assistant professor and head of the fashion workshop. “It’s a helpful software that will help students in their future careers.”
The workshop also engaged fashion design students in leadership opportunities. Jadie Geleerd, a senior in FAA, helped lead the sessions after working with the University to develop coursework using the 3D software.
“Chiara, the professor, has a sustainable fashion course already that I took last semester, and I developed a zero-waste pattern in that class,” Geleerd said. “So I thought I had a little bit of experience to help out with working on this.”

After creating their designs in CLO3D, the students spent the third session in the Siebel Center for Design shop, printing and making their designs.
The Student Sustainability Committee funded a grant that made this workshop possible. Its goal is to inspire students to live sustainably.
“The fashion industry is terrible, to be honest,” Geleerd said. “They have a lot of programs and policies in place, but one, a lot of companies and stuff don’t actually follow them, or they have a lot of goals that they don’t reach. So I think just educating people about sustainable fashion and what the options are is really important.”
