The Illinois Marathon has brought athletes to Champaign-Urbana for the past 15 years, but a new event is heading to town. The C-U Triathlon will make its debut this summer on July 20 at 8 a.m.
The C-U Triathlon consists of a 400-yard swim, a 10-mile bike ride and a 5K run. The swim will take place at the Stephens Family YMCA, while the bike and run course will cover several streets, including Windsor and Curtis roads.
In addition to the triathlon, the event will include activities such as games, music and food for spectators to take part in.
The event has been a long time coming and is presented by the Champaign Park District and Stephens Family YMCA.
“We’ve explored the possibility of offering a triathlon to the community for years and the opportunity to partner with the Champaign Park District made perfect sense,” said Jeff Dobrik, COO of the YMCA.

Dobrik hopes the event will foster community among athletes and their families, with the inclusion of non-triathlon activities.
Registration for the triathlon is open now through July 19, and the deadline to receive a T-shirt is June 20.
