Volition shows off upcoming video game release

To finish off a nationwide tour promoting its upcoming video game, Red Faction Guerrilla, a local video game company welcomed Champaign-area residents to try out the new game Monday in downtown Champaign.

Volition, Inc., which hosted a touring truck in front of its headquarters at 1 E Main Street, hoped to show off what it has been working on for the past five years.

“This game is the first of its kind,” Volition producer Rick White said. “This game is the first to incorporate a total destruction system. How the game unravels is all in the hands of the person playing it.”

The Volition team has been working on the new technology for the game for five years with the help of interns from the University. Many people do not even realize that the popular game manufacturer is located in Champaign, White said.

Besides getting a chance to preview the new game, to be released on June 2 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 video game systems, visitors can also receive free giveaways, such as freeze-dried ice cream, and the chance to test out a Segway. But be careful, as the Segway may take some time to master, Sean Gilpin, a visitor to the event, said.

“I just saw a guy fall off when he made a sharp turn,” Gilpin said.

The tour truck has been traveling for the past two months with the Music as a Weapon Tour, a concert tour featuring the bands Disturbed and Killswitch Engage among others, Jody Sotter, who has been driving the truck across the country, said.

Red Faction Guerrilla is the third in the Red Faction series and is the first since 2003. The truck will be parked outside of Volition until 8 p.m. Monday.
