Students’ cause of death unknown, under investigation

By Se Young Lee

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of a University student.

Joshua David Schoon, a 21-year-old junior in LAS, was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Richard Schoon said the coroner’s office “gave very sketchy details” when he was notified of his son’s death.

“We really don’t know what happened except that our son is dead,” Schoon said.

Bill Fabian, the county’s chief deputy coroner, declined to provide any details related to the death because the case is still under investigation. Fabian said all pertinent information would be released during an inquest that is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 21, assuming the toxicology report is completed on time. He did disclose, however, that there was no suspicion of foul play.

The Champaign police could not be reached for further information.

Funeral ceremonies were held at the Saint Alexis Catholic Church in Bensenville, Ill., Joshua Schoon’s hometown, on Monday at 10 a.m.

Carol Schoon, Joshua’s mother, wished her son to be remembered for his happiness in life.

“Joshua had a wonderful smile,” she said.
