Green Street shops still recovering

By Mary Johnson

Some businesses on the 600 block of Green Street are still suffering the consequences of the Sept. 6 flooding.

Brent O’Neill, networks operation manager for Illinois American Water, said the flooding was caused by a leaking fire service line under Hometown Pantry at the corner of Green and Sixth streets.

O’Neill said he is not sure why the fire service line sprung a leak, but said the age of the pipes could be a factor. He said the leak filled the basements of the businesses completely. Cleanup efforts fell on the individual businesses.

Hometown Pantry was not available for comment, but other businesses are still suffering the effects of the leak.

Anne Johnston, Campus Florist owner, said she is still recuperating from the flooding.

In addition to the seven days of business Johnston lost, she also lost two compressors for her refrigerators, a hot water heater and basement shelving.

“It took nine days of generator work just to get the water out,” Johnston said.

Johnston hired a company to clean up the water and is waiting for the bill to determine the cost of the damage.
