Residents reject parking lot proposal at city council

By Charles Menchaca

Several Urbana residents spoke in opposition Monday night to a parking lot proposed by the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, 904 S. Lincoln Ave.

Some of the residents spoke on behalf of Muriel “Mickey” Scheinman, a resident who would live near the parking lot. Their various issues with the parking lot included increased noise, increased lighting and pedestrian dangers.

Urbana Mayor Tod Satterthwaite proposed that the issue be evaluated and possibly made into an agenda item for next week’s meeting.

Libby Tyler, community development director, said the sorority does not have the required building permit to actually begin paving a parking lot.

However, Tyler also said she will probably release the permit today to begin demolition of an emptied house at 806 W. Iowa St., the intended site for the parking lot.
