Tsunami fundraiser held on Quad today

By Nate Sandstrom

The Sri Lankan Society is planning a fund-raiser today on the Quad and at the south entrance of the Illini Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be selling baked goods inside the Union entrance and hot chocolate just outside. The money will provide aid to those affected by the tsunami that struck several nations bordering the Indian Ocean on Dec. 26.

The society also works with the Sri Lankan Association that comprises Sri Lankans in the area who are not affiliated with the University. They have already held fund-raising events at local Wal-Marts to help victims but hope to raise additional money with the students back for the semester, said Indu Rupassara, president of the Sri Lankan Society.

The Sri Lankan Society is also accepting personal donations for tsunami relief aid. You can visit their Web site at
