UI offers solutions to ease exam stress

By Molly Rafter

Finals week is just around the corner and for many students, reality has set in. Finals week can be a stressful time for many students, but the University is making efforts to accommodate students to ensure they have a comfortable study experience.

Certain University libraries will be open extra hours during finals week. The Undergraduate Library and Grainger Engineering Library will be open 24 hours starting May 5, and will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 13.

Students can rent out the guest rooms at the Illini Union if the residence halls, apartments, sorority or fraternity houses and libraries are not the best places for them to study. The Illini Union Hotel will be renting out their guest rooms to students from May 8 through May 12.

“Students can rent out our guest rooms for $50 a night,” said John Hammond, hotel manager at The Illini Union Hotel.

Hammond said students who stay in the guest rooms are guaranteed a quiet and comfortable place to study. He also said students will receive a free gift upon checking in.

“Students will also receive a goodie bag full of complimentary snacks,” Hammond said.

University housing will also be making efforts to accommodate students during the next week. Thursday night, they will be offering a midnight breakfast at the Peabody and ISR dining rooms from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. to feed hungry students who are up late studying.

“The midnight breakfast is free for anyone who lives in University housing – it doesn’t even cost meal card points,” said Kirsten Ruby, assistant director of University housing for marketing.

Ruby said they offer the midnight breakfast to University housing students every spring finals week.

“We have great food, from omelettes to pancakes, coffee and juice,” Ruby said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Bromley Hall, a private residence hall, will be offering numerous services to residents during finals week.

“We will be offering study snacks to students every night starting at 8 p.m.,” said Ben Hammer, resident director of Bromley Hall.

Hammer also said Bromley would be having a late-night pizza party on Tuesday, May 10.

Brett Twait, freshman in applied life studies and resident of Bromley Hall, said she appreciated what Bromley offers during finals week.

“It’s nice that Bromley has a 24-quiet-hour policy, just as long as it’s enforced,” Twait said. “I’m glad we are offered snacks too – it’s kind of a little bonus to studying.”

Students looking for a caffeine fix during late-night study sessions can break for a drink at campus coffee shops.

The Espresso Royale located in the undergraduate library will remain open for 24 hours during finals week. All campus Espresso Royale locations will be offering discounts during finals week.

“Last semester, we offered $2 any-size lattes,” said Lauren Gramly, store manager of the Espresso Royale located at 1117 W. Oregon St. in Urbana. “We don’t know for sure what types of specials we will be offering, but we definitely will be offering drink specials to customers during finals week.”
