University YMCA hosts ‘Dump and Run’

By Jason Koch

The fourth annual “Dump and Run,” sponsored by the University YMCA, begins Monday.

The program allows students and members of the community to donate anything they no longer want for a large garage sale in late August.

The YMCA is collecting “anything and everything,” said Rachael Dietkus, director of development for the YMCA. Acceptable items include clothes, desks, dressers, kitchen items, cameras and posters, among others.

The YMCA will not accept such things as washers and dryers, sleeper sofas, older computers or anything they know they cannot sell.

The project reduces litter and consumer waste, saves space in landfills and lowers dumping costs for certified housing and apartments, Dietkus said.

Collection runs through June 4 and then again during the first week in August. Volunteers are also needed to help run this year’s sale, to be held Aug. 25-27 at the Stock Pavillion. People interested in volunteering should contact Dietkus at 337-1500.

Last year, the program collected five semi-trucks full of donated merchandise, which raised $30,000 for YMCA-sponsored student programs, including Amnesty International and Alternative Spring Break.
