Urbana parking challenged

By Joe Parrino

Students and faculty who park on streets north of campus may be cruising for a new spot soon. Urbana residents have complained to the city about excessive parking in the neighborhood near the railroad tracks between Wright Street and Goodwin Avenue.

Urbana Public Works Director Bill Gray announced a neighborhood meeting to be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Martin Luther King Elementary School gym, 1108 W. Fairview Ave. The meeting will allow residents to inform city representatives of the extent of the problem and to discuss possible remedies.

“We don’t know if it is the University community packing these streets, but that is the allegation,” Gray said.

Gray speculated that recent parking restrictions on the Champaign side of campus have “shoved drivers toward parking areas in Urbana.” Urbana could respond with its own restrictions in the form of meters, time limits, or permit parking, Gray said.

Members of the city’s police, finance and public departments are scheduled to appear at the meeting. Gray said all neighborhood residents have been notified by mail.
