A Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus and a Mercury Mountaineer driven by 80-year-old Urbana resident Derrol Halberstadt were involved in an accident Tuesday afternoon at the corner of First Street and Gregory Drive.

The bus was on the 26-Pack-route when, Halberstadt said, it hit his car while he was crossing the intersection heading north on First Street. He said the bus was traveling east on Gregory Street and the front of the bus hit the driver’s side of his car. He said his car was spun around until it was facing south. He was able to drive the car out of the intersection.

Halberstadt said he and his wife were most likely not hurt.

“I think (neither of us was hurt); I got a little sore shoulder,” he said.

The car was damaged on the driver’s side, and the door handle for the back door on that side was ripped off. The driver’s side headlights of the bus were broken.

A Champaign police officer said the accident report would only be available after the investigation concluded and that the police department has to review the videotape from inside the bus before the investigation can be concluded. He declined to say whether citations had been made against either party.

CU MTD personnel on the scene declined to comment.
