Champaign’s snow removal ordinance in effect for second time

By Erica Magda

Champaign’s snow removal ordinance went into effect this morning after Saturday night’s snowfall. It calls for Champaign’s campus and city residents to shovel their sidewalks by 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

“There’s a lot of students who are out of town and fraternities and sororities who haven’t thought this through,” Susan Salzman, property maintenance supervisor in the neighborhood service department of Champaign, said.

She added that buildings that are unoccupied in the downtown area might be problematic areas as well.

If sidewalks aren’t shoveled, the city will hire the public works department, or a contractor. The cost will be billed to the property owners, said Salzman.

This is the second time the ordinance has been put into effect. The first time the snow melted by the Wednesday deadline. Salzman said she fears that the ordinance won’t run as smoothly this time around.

The ordinance will go into effect whenever there is two inches of snowfall or freezing rain, Salzman said. It goes into effect after the city plows the streets and cleans public sidewalks off.

“Then the rest of the city is expected to have theirs done in 48 hours,” she said.
