By Britany Patterson

In years to come, the home you live in may be owned by the store right across the street, Menards.

The company has purchased a parcel of land that will be divided into both residential areas and retail outlets.

Lisa Karcher, Urbana Community Development Services planner, said that plans are underway for a residential community near the new Menards.

“They’re proposing right now kind of a mix of townhouses and condominums,” Karcher said.

According to The News Gazette, Menards purchased 357 acres of property in Urbana in October 2005. The majority of the land is east of Illinois 130. The property will contain both a Menards store and a subdivision.

On the west side of Illinois 130, the company has plans for a commercial area for other retail stores.

Menards also wants to improve and widen Illinois 130. The company hopes to extend Florida Avenue into Illinois 130, increasing the width of the highway to four or five lanes.

Menards hopes to open their store in 2010 or 2011.
