The flu season is offically here, but beware, the seasonal flu vaccine may not protect you from contracting the virus.
Julie Pryde from the Champaign County Health District said some strains of the flu may go untreated.

“This year what we’re hearing from other states is that the vaccine that was given is not covering the strain that’s going around right now,” Pryde said. “So it may not be providing full protection.”
The seasonal vaccine contains the three most prevalent versions of the flu virus. Pryde said that if the virus that hits the area is a different strain, the vaccine is less effective.
“Even people who have had the flu shot may get symptoms,” Pryde said. “Hopefully they will be lesser than someone who didn’t have the shot.”
Jennifer Hendrix, the Carle Clinic public relations manager, said that both Carle Hospital and the Champaign County Health District have administered all of their vaccines. They purchased over 50 thousand doses this season.
Pryde said the best way to control the spread of the flu is through preventative measures like washing your hands.
