Champaign man dies from injuries in motorcycle crash

By Erika Strebel

Delt Baines, 68, of Champaign, was pronounced dead 8 a.m. Thursday at Carle Hospital, according to a press release from the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.

Baines was one of two motorcycle operators involved in a motorcycle and automobile collision Wednesday at 4:27 p.m. on Route 150.

Baines and Ronald W. Huffman, 66, of Clinton, Ill., were traveling westbound on Route 150, each driving his own motorcycle.

An eastbound Toyota, driven by Frank Barber, 24, of Ogden, Ill., crossed the center line and struck the two motorcycles at the same time, said Bill Fabian, chief deputy coroner for the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.

The motorcycles went off the roadway, and both men were thrown off their motorcycles, he said.

Huffman was pronounced dead at the scene, while Baines was airlifted to the hospital.

Barber was also taken to the hospital.

Autopsies on Baines and Huffman were performed Thursday afternoon, said Fabian.

“There is no doubt that they died of their injuries,” he said. “It’s just a matter of what those injuries were.”
