Senate supports legislation for LGBT programs

By Andrew Maloney

The resolution that stalled the Illinois Student Senate meeting last week did not have the result the same Wednesday night.

An item concerning Women’s and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender programming sparked considerable debate on Oct. 8, but was passed this week by a vote of 24-6.

The legislation, which sought to include a referendum about supporting Women’s and LGBT programming on the spring 2009 ISS election ballot, caused enough discussion at the Student Senate meeting last week to delay a vote because of a lack of quorum.

Much of the dispute centered on an amendment to split the resolution into different segments, one centered on the support of the new programming, and the other supporting an increased fee for cultural programming in general.

Both the resolution and amendment were called to vote after considerably less discussion this week, with the amendment being struck down by a vote of 20-9.

Also on the agenda for the ISS on Wednesday was an appearance by University President B. Joseph White, who discussed aspects of his role in the school’s administration. White thanked the members of the Illinois Student Senate for serving in a leadership capacity on campus, and said much of his job as president concerned protecting the quality of the University and enabling students to stay in school and graduate on time.

He also addressed concerns about the economy by calling the current economic period “extremely turbulent,” and said that while many would experience financial difficulties, his goal was to make sure the University was “stronger, better, and more competitive” after the next 12 to 24 months.
