Fiery head-on crash kills 1, closes I-74 on Friday

By The Associated Press

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A short stretch of Interstate 74 is closed in Champaign after a head-on collision that killed one person and injured two more.

Illinois State Police say the crash happened early Friday afternoon, just after they received a report of someone driving west in the freeway’s eastbound lanes.

The Champaign Fire Department says the car struck other vehicles and caught on fire.

Two people have been hospitalized. Police have not released the identities of the person who died or of the injured.

Police say as of 4:40 p.m., eastbound traffic is being diverted to side streets in Champaign. Westbound traffic is moving slowly.
