Carjacking reported at Marketplace Mall

By James VandeBerg

An attempted carjacking was reported at Marketplace Mall in Champaign last night, according to a press release.

Three males, all in their early 20s, were approached by a black male holding a gun. The suspect demanded they exit and turn over the vehicle. One victim removed the keys from the ignition and ran inside the mall to yell for help, the release said.

While summoning help, the victim saw the same suspect enter a different dark colored Jeep SUV at gunpoint, fleeing with a white male in his early 20s still inside.

“The suspect is described as a dark-skinned, black male, early 20s, 6’0 to 6’5″ tall with a heavy build weighing 250-300 lbs., deep voice, wearing a black, puffy jacket with fur trim on the hood,” the release said.

The alleged victim nor the SUV have not yet been located.
