Sex Out Loud aims to educate students about sexual health

Sexual health and education is certainly something to shout about.

That’s the idea with Sex Out Loud, an annual event sponsored by the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, which aims to educate students and explore the many different facets of sexual health and pleasure.

“It’s a really cool place for broad based dialogue,” said Ross Wantland, coordinator of sexual assault education for the Women’s Resources Center.

Wantland said that a variety of community groups, including those representing LGBT services, abstinence, and the empowerment of women have booths on display for the event.

“Sexuality means a lot of different things to a lot of different people,’ Wantland said.

Some groups, such as the LGBT Resource Center, primarily aim to explore various issues on campus.

“It’s basically an organization for LGBT people of color and their allies to discuss issues on campus,” said Robbe Burton, freshman in LAS.

Burton said the organization is also promoting several upcoming events, including a speed dating service this Thursday.

“This is a wonderful idea,” said Gia Lewis, program director for YWCA.

The WYCA, celebrating its 125th birthday this year, is promoting its Race Against Racism event at Sex Out Loud.

Rape Crisis Services, another organization, is also represented.

“It’s an organization that supports victims and their significant others,” said Bianca Michuda, program associate.

Michuda said the organization offers legal and medical advocacy as well as other services including a 24 hour hotline.

“Our theme is enduring violence every day,” Michuda said.

Illini Arcade and Fantasy’s, two Champaign-Urbana based sex shops, were also on hand to offer a different perspective on sex.

“We’re having giveaways, a raffle, and we’re asking any questions people have,” said Dawn Harris, manager of Fantasy’s.

A variety of colorful sex toys and information was on display at the booth for curious attendees.

“We also have the Obama dong,” said Thai Cornwell, manager of Illini Arcade. “It’s definitely the first political dong I’ve ever seen.”

Sex Out Loud is being held today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Illini Union.
