Due to the high volume of traffic expected over Memorial Day Weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that some roadwork would be suspended in order to make traveling easier.

The suspension will begin on Friday, May 22, at 3p.m. and last until midnight on Monday, May 25.

“All roads need to be open to traffic by 3p.m. tomorrow,” said Kensil Garnett, Champaign district 5 construction engineer. “We can’t start work again until early Tuesday morning.”

All roads will be open except for the bridge replacement under Illinois 49 (South) north of Ogden.

“The bridge is closed, and has been for a while now, but there is a marked detour in effect,” Garnett said.

The temporary closings will not delay construction, Garnett added.

In the surrounding areas of Dewitt County, Douglas County, Vermilion County and Piatt County, roadwork will continue, but one lane of traffic will be open.

Additionally, in the greater Chicagoland area all lanes on the Edens, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Stevenson, Tri-State Tollway (I-94, I-294, I-80) Northwest Tollway (I-90),North-South Tollway (I-355) and Reagan Memorial, Tollway (I-88), as well as I-80 and I-57 will be open.

Despite the open lanes, IDOT is encouraging drivers to drive slowly and safely. Work zone speed limits will still apply, with a minimum fine of $375.

IDOT and Illinois State Police are working together to ensure that everyone is buckled up for the “Click It of Ticket” Campaign. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, more than 3,600 safety belt checks are expected to be enforced with almost 200 after dark.
