A drastic price cut of more than 75 percent in adult annual passes for Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District buses could be in effect as soon as July 1.
The MTD board will vote June 24 on whether or not to approve a reduction of the annual adult passes from the current price of $245 to $60. The steep price cut is possible in this economic recession because the MTD got an infusion of state funding last year and is in good financial shape, said Bill Volk, MTD managing director.
“Gas prices have gone up,” Volk said. “We thought it would be a good time to lower fares.”
Volk added that if the price cut goes into effect, it would be a one-year trial.
Volk said $60 for an annual adult pass was settled on because that would be a fiscal impact of about a half-million dollars, which is what the MTD was willing to do.
