Take a peek inside this week’s ISS meeting

The Illinois Student Senate adopted a resolution regarding the University’s decision to implement furlough days at their weekly meeting Wednesday evening.

“We understand that this is a circumstance that no one at our university wants to face; however, the circumstances have called for it,” said Carey Ash, vice president-internal of ISS. “The students, staff and University are going to have to band together and weather this storm.”

The resolution states the student senate’s support for the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate’s statement on the furloughs.

“The furloughs are one of the responses from the administration in terms of dealing with these difficult financial times,” said Brad Tran, president of ISS. “I know a lot of thought has been put into pursuing this route, but I think in terms of the situation it’s pretty clear that something has to be done.”

Although the senate agreed that the decision to institute furloughs was necessary, Tran said that the situation will have effects on students. He added that he and the rest of the senate hope to minimize these effects.

“If the furloughs are taken in a manner that reduces (academic) instruction or the quality of it, I think it’s a detriment,” Tran said.

ISS also passed several other resolutions, including a unanimous vote to confirm a Campus Safety and Crime Prevention Town Hall Forum in early February and another setting a deadline to adjourn weekly meetings at 9 p.m.

In addition to the resolutions, the senate voted in favor of appropriations for the Outstanding Faculty Award Luncheon.

Chris Pudelek, chairman of the committee on academic affairs, said that the luncheon will honor five instructors who were chosen online by students. Students submitted instructors’ names along with reasons why they chose that particular instructor, he added.

The date of the event is not yet set, although it is planned for the third week of February.

The Illinois Student Senate meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Pine Lounge of the Illini Union.
