A call concerning a general fire alarm was made at 1 p.m. to the Champaign fire department Saturday afternoon. The fire started in the southwest side of the Main Library’s basement.
“The first unit responded at 1:04 p.m.” said Deputy Fire Chief Eric Mitchell of the Champaign fire department.
Upon arrival of the first responders, the fire was upgraded to a “working fire” Mitchell said.
“An investigation is on the way” Mitchell said. “It doesn’t appear to be suspicious.”
The building was evacuated, and there were no injuries.

The fire happened in a mechanical room in the basement Mitchell said. There was some smoke damage.
The Main Library is located at 1408 W. Gregory, in Champaign.
Eight fire units from the Champaign and Urbana fire departments responded to the fire.
