Shriver announced as speaker of the 139th Commencement

Timothy Shriver, the chairman and chief executive officer of Special Olympics International, has been named the speaker of the 139th Commencement at the University.

Shriver will be speaking at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 16 at Assembly Hall, 1800 S. First St. in Champaign.

According to the University News Bureau, Shriver works with 3.1 million Special Olympic athletes and their families in 175 countries.

Along with working for the Special Olympics, Shriver also created the New Haven Public Schools’ Social Development Project and co-founded the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning.

According to the News Bureau, Shriver earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale, master’s degree from Catholic University and a doctorate in education from the University of Connecticut.

Babette Hiles, director of special events at the University, said the chancellor received input from various sources including faculty and alumni to reach the decision of choosing Shriver for this years commencement.
