Campus parking during Champaign asphalt overlay work

The City of Champaign 2011 Bituminous (Asphalt) Overlay Project will take place starting July 13 until July 25.

This is an annual project designed to rehabilitate the aging city street pavements by overlaying them with new layers of asphalt, according to the press release. The work will include the milling and paving of streets on campus.

The streets included in the project are First Street (from Gregory Street to Springfield Avenue), Armory Avenue (from First Street to Fourth Street), Chalmers Street (from First Street to Wright Street), Third Street (from John Street to Springfield Avenue), and Fifth Street (from Armory Avenue to Springfield Avenue).

Additionally, Healey Street (east of First Street), John Street (west of First Street), Chalmers Street (east of First Street) and Armory Avenue (east and west of First Street) will be closed while Open Road Paving is working on First Street. Daniel Street will have access to First Street.

In a press release, the city is asking those parking their vehicles on the designated streets to park them elsewhere and clear those streets, since one parked car can hold up these activities and prolong the project’s duration.

The public is asked to keep the bagged meter spaces and areas designated with “No Parking” signs clear of vehicles. Since the work on the streets will be phased, parking elsewhere will continue to be available.

Those looking for metered parking are encouraged to seek it along nearby streets such as Second, Locust, Oak, Daniel and John streets.

Those looking for the city’s on-street permit parking are encouraged to seek for the two generally available metered spaces in each block or in Parking Lot J located at the corner of Sixth and Green streets.
