A University professor will soon be one of the newest inductees into the Engineering and Science Hall of Fame.
Nick Holonyak Jr., professor of electrical and computer engineering and physics, is recognized for inventing the first practical light-emitting diode, or LED. Holonyak will be inducted on Nov. 2 in Dayton, Ohio alongside Nikola Tesla and James Tsui.
Holonyak’s LED innovation is used in items such as bicycle taillights and instrument panels. More recently, Holonyak worked with electrical and computer engineering professor Milton Fend to demonstrate transistor laser, which can improve the availability and speed of computers.
The Engineering and Science Hall of Fame honors engineers and scientists for their accomplishments in enhancing the quality of life for humanity.
