Run or Dye race canceled due to complications with obtaining permission to use University property

The Run or Dye race scheduled for May 10 has been canceled because of complications with obtaining permission to use University property.

Run or Dye is a 5K race held in cities all across the country that incorporates throwing different colors of dye at the runners competing. The course for this year’s race was scheduled to run through both campus and Champaign property.

According to campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler, the organizers of the race did not initially approach the Facility Management and Scheduling office to get permission to use campus property.

“When we learned of the race course and that it involved campus streets and campus parking lots, our FMS office reached out to the organizers and told them they have get permission to use the property,” Kaler said.

Organizers for the race were notified on March 6 that they did not receive permission to use campus property, according to a press release from the city of Champaign.

“By the time they connected with the University, it was too late to create any kind of contract that would adhere to campus policies for an event of that magnitude on that date,” Kaler said.

Champaign city officials told the organizers they were still open to hosting the race if the organizers were willing to reschedule it for a later date, according to the press release.

The Run or Dye race has been rescheduled, but it will no longer take place in Champaign. The new date for the event is set for October 14 at the Rantoul National Aviation Center, according to a blog post on the event’s website.
