Urbana Police investigate fatal accident

By The Daily Illini Staff Report

A vehicle crash involving a pedestrian was reported to Urbana police at approximately 10 p.m. Friday night, according to a press release from Lt. Richard Surles of the Urbana Police Department. Officers and a passing doctor administered first aid to the victim, a 43-year-old male. An ambulance arrived and took the victim to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

According to the press release, 64-year-old Sumie Metz, the driver of the car who struck Harris,  approached officers when they arrived at the scene and said she thought she hit an object, so she parked a short distance away to investigate what the object was. Metz, a Rantoul resident, was also taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and was released after being evaluated by medical personnel.

Metz was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The Champaign County Coroner’s Office performed the autopsy Saturday and confirmed that Harris died as a result of injuries from the vehicle. Surles said in the release that the investigation is ongoing.
