Urbana bank robbed, suspect fled police investigating

A bank robbery took place Friday afternoon at First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust in Urbana.

The Urbana Police Department sent out press release Friday evening stating that the robbery had taken place around 3 p.m. at the bank on 601 South Vine Street.

The suspect entered the bank using the south doors, and brandished a handgun while demanding money. An unspecified amount of money was given to the suspect, and he then fled from the bank by foot, initially heading south and then west.

Sources described the suspect as a white male in his 50’s with white hair. He is around 5’6” and with a medium build. It was reported he was wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and had been carrying a black duffel bag.

The suspect wore an orange face mask and sunglasses to disguise his appearance while committing the robbery. But while exiting the bank, he removed the orange face mask and put on a camouflage baseball cap.

Three of the bank’s employees were present and no customers were inside the bank during the time that the robbery occurred. No injuries were reported.

The Urbana Police Department is in the midst of the investigation and is involving the FBI.
