Champaign church holds 10th annual Christmas dinner

By Clare Budin, Assistant Daytime News Editor, Assistant Special Sections Editor

The First Christian Church of Champaign will hold its tenth consecutive volunteer Christmas dinner for those who would otherwise be alone or without a special dinner on Christmas Day.

Appetizers will be provided by Church volunteers at 12:30 p.m. with a free sit-down dinner to follow at 1 p.m.

Special guest Jim Turpin, the long-time host of Penny for Your Thoughts on WDWS-AM in Champaign, will return to serve as emcee of the event.

Children under the age of 12 who attend will receive a small gift along with their dinner.

Volunteers and organizers of the event vow to hold a dinner for guests regardless of any harsh winter conditions outside.

“We have made many new friends over the years at the Christmas Dinner, and we’re looking forward to renewing their acquaintances and meeting even more people this time,” said returning event organizer Lynne Barnes in a press release. “The community support from business and family volunteers as well as all of our guests has been tremendous.”
