UPDATE: Sept. 12, 5:22 p.m.
Lieutenant Cory Koker of the Urbana Police Department’s Investigations Division told The Daily Illini the victim in Tuesday’s accident was a woman riding an electric scooter.
Koker said the individual was approaching Goodwin Avenue at the same time as a bus was pulling up to the intersection’s stop line.
“The pedestrian on the scooter actually entered into the crosswalk in a way that she should have waited until that bus had actually left that area,” Koker said. “She then collided with the bumper of the bus, hitting her.”
Koker said the victim sustained scratching and bruising, but he isn’t aware of any further injuries.
Rosemary Wennlund, freshman in LAS, said she was walking back from class when she said she saw a teal bus strike a woman riding a scooter.
“I watched her, the girl, tumble to the ground after being there for a few seconds, and roll over a few times,” Wennlund said. “The scooter ended up getting tucked under the bus, but she kind of just flew off of it.”
Wennlund added she and another three bystanders went to check on the victim shortly after the collision and called emergency services.
“She could sit up, she was conscious and she could speak,” Wennlund said. “She was pretty shaky, but other than that, she was okay.”
