A construction crew working on a seven-story building at 507 E. Green St., hit a private, four-inch water main at approximately 2:20 p.m., which partially flooded the right-hand lane of Green St. from Gameday Sports to National City Bank.

Illinois American Water was called out immediately to respond to the flooding, said Chris Hartman, a member of the construction team at the scene.

“We’ll probably be here much of the night,” said Dale Sleigh, who was called out to pump the water out of the construction area and keep it from flowing into the street.

Water reached the street after flooding the majority of the construction site.

Larry Cowgur of Parkhill Construction said they are having difficulity finding the water main.

“They’re not finding it back there,” he said, pointing to the south end of the construction site.

Cowgur said he is not sure when the water will be cleared up from Green Street.

The Daily Illini reported on Tuesday that the building being constructed on that lot would be the location of the new Urban Outfitters coming to campus.
