Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Renee Romano confirmed Tuesday afternoon, the death of Cathy Acevedo, associate dean of students.

No cause or time of death has yet been released, Romano said. The Office of Public Affairs has not released Acevedo’s age or any additional information.

Acevedo worked on many projects around campus including spending time as an emergency dean, working with the culture centers and the various community police departments, Romano said.

Acevedo came to the University from UCLA and leaves behind a husband and a young son in addition to many other relatives in California, according to an e-mail from student trustee, Chime O. Asonye to student senate members Tuesday afternoon.

She was also involved in the upcoming “Race Diversity and Campus Climate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign” conference scheduled for Thursday, according to the e-mail.

Acevedo was also a strong ally for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community on campus, said Mike Allen, PHD student in LAS.

“Cathy had an energy and excitement about students and student life on campus that was contagious,” Allen said. “We are really going to miss her.”
