Rallies demanding new mascot to be held Homecoming weekend

Students for a United Illinois will be holding rallies beginning Oct. 22 calling for a new mascot and an end to the use of the “chief.”

Students for a United Illinois is a coalition of comprised of nineteen student and community organizations, according to the press release. This group is working together to move the campus away from the former mascot “chief”, which was officially retired in February 2007.

The first rally will take place at the Swanlund Administration, 601 East John Street,

Champaign. This will be held on Friday, Oct. 22 beginning at 12 p.m.

The second rally will take place at Assembly Hall, 1800 South First Street, Champaign, I before Students for Chief Illiniwek’s “The Next Dance” event. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Assembly Hall.
