Cause of fire at University Avenue and Harvey Street under investigation

By Daily Illini Staff Report

The Urbana Fire Department responded to a fire just after 6 a.m. Tuesday at  the corner of University Avenue and Harvey Street.

The building on fire was a staff support building owned by the University, Fire Marshal Phil Edwards said.

He said there were no known injuries or casualties, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Ameren was on the scene to close off a natural gas line that was in the area, but they have not determined what role, if any, the natural gas played in the fire, Edwards said.

Two Illini-Alerts were issued regarding the fire. One around 6 a.m. telling students to avoid the area and another around 9 a.m. saying that, although the fire had been extinguished, the area around the fire was still blocked off.
