Female engineering statue to promote gender equality

By Daily Illini Staff Report

A statue of a female engineer will be completed in the next academic year.

The statue was announced at a dedication Thursday. Two spaces at the new Electrical and Computer Engineering building were dedicated to Texas Instruments after their gift of $3.2 million.

TI announced they would fund the building of the statue to inspire women to pursue careers in engineering.

The statue was proposed in 2014 by Sakshi Srivastava, senior in Engineering. In a previous interview with The Daily Illini, she said she felt a statue was needed to show commitment to females in STEM fields and to foster campus unity.

Currently, a male statue, known as “Grainger Bob,” sits outside Grainger Engineering Library.
