Joliet man arrested on drug charges

By Daily Illini Staff Report

The University of Illinois Police Department arrested a Joliet man in the 600 block of South State Street Tuesday night for possession of approximately half a kilogram of cannabis with intent to deliver.

According to a press release, police seized both the cannabis and $3,400 in cash from Robert Zabel, 21. University police detectives were waiting for Zabel at a residence where he was expecting to deliver 372 grams of cannabis. The police department’s Targeted Response Unit had been looking at Zabel’s activity as a part of an ongoing investigation.

“Obviously other people were working with him. He was getting his cannabis from somewhere,” said Patrick Wade, UIPD spokesperson. “We know that he recently bought a pound of cannabis from Chicago, and he was distributing that around the state. So obviously he’s got people selling to him, he’s selling to other people.”

Police found another 125 grams of cannabis in Zabel’s car along with 18 Adderall pills. The estimated street value of the total bounty seized from Zabel is approximately $8,300.

“It’s an ongoing investigation, and our main focus is keeping drugs out of our own community. That’s where we’re going to focus our effort,” Wade said.
