UIPD issues Campus Safety Notice following Campustown assault

A Campus Safety Notice was issued early Sunday morning after an assault occurred in the 700 block of S. Sixth Street around 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

According to the notice, the victim was walking northbound on the west side of S. Sixth Street when an offender unknown to the victim struck the victim in the back of the head, causing them to fall and blackout. The victims was transported to a local hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

The notice described the offender as an average-built male, approximately 6 feet tall, dressed in a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants. The offender was seen running southbound following the attack. 

The University of Illinois Police Department is investigating the incident, the report stated. 

Anyone with information about the attack is encouraged to call the UIPD at (217) 333-1216. Information can also be reported to the Champaign County CrimeStoppers anonymously by calling (217) 373-8477. A video of the attack, captured by a UIPD camera, can be seen below.
